Both the missionaries and the authorities rejected the traditional practice of dowries as reprehensible, as tantamount to buying a human life. This rejection is expressed in The Fisherman. A fisherman is given permission to marry the girl he loves. Yet instead of paying the dowry before the marriage, it is agreed that he can pay it off in installments after the wedding.
